The Burlington Magazine has maintained a reputation as an authoritative source of information about developments in art history since its foundation by Bernard Berenson, Herbert Horne, Roger Fry and others in 1903. In celebration of its recent centenary, an eminent art historian has selected some of the best articles, reviews, editorials, and obituaries published over the course of its history. The essays – ranging from the serious and scholarly to the scandalous and gossipy – were written by artists and literary figures as well as by art historians, and the collection is both entertaining and instructive.
Sir Michael Levey, formerly Director of the National Gallery, London, has selected the articles for the anthology and has written an introduction. He is the author of a number of books on eighteenth-century art, including Painting and Sculpture in France 1700-1789 (Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 1993).
The anthology is edited by Caroline Elam, Andrew W. Mellon Professor, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, National Gallery, Washington, and formerly Editor of The Burlington Magazine.
