The Burlington Magazine has maintained a reputation as an authoritative source of information about developments in art history since its foundation by Bernard Berenson, Herbert Horne, Roger Fry and others in 1903. In celebration of its centenary, a selection was made of some of the best articles, reviews, editorials, and obituaries published over the course of its history. The essays – ranging from the serious and scholarly to the scandalous and gossipy – were written by artists and literary figures as well as by art historians, and the collection is both entertaining and instructive.
The selection was made by the late Sir Michael Levey, former Director of the National Gallery, London, 1993. It was edited by Caroline Elam, former Editor of The Burlington Magazine.
