[ Franses of Piccadilly Ltd, 169 Piccadilly, London ] A rare and important Tibetan Temple Banner Applique silk and cotton, 19 ft. 6 in. × 6 ft. 4 in. The hanging shows an Amitabha or Amitayus Buddha. His hands are in the Position of Meditation, encircling a consecration vessel which holds the spiritual water of life. The vessel itself should be adorned with peacock feathers; the peacock was believed to have the ability to swallow all poisons, that is, sins. The Mantric symbol is hrim, as would be expected with the figure of the Amitayus Buddha, who is naturally shown crowned and ornamented, with the body colour of red. The Amitayus Buddha denotes the Dispenser of Long Life.
