[Alexander E. Squadrilli, 13 Chemin Jules Cougnard, Geneva] The painting reproduced above presumably depicts the flogging of Saints Paul and Silas at Philippi. It is on canvas, and measures 134 by 97 centimeters (52½ × 38 inches). The painting was lined, apparently as part of a restoration performed a hundred or more years ago. The original canvas and pigment appear to be of the 17th century. Traces of plaster on the hand-hewn stretcher suggest that it might have been affixed to a wall, perhaps in a church, by that means. Fragments of paper with printing in old French found on the stretcher suggest the painting's past presence in a French-speaking health resort catering to patients with arthritis, rheumatism, etc. I am endeavouring to confirm the subject and to establish the painting's authorship. Anyone having knowledge of a drawing or engraving bearing an analogy to this scene is invited kindly to write to me at the address below.

His hands are in the Position of Meditation, encircling a consecration vessel which holds the spiritual water of life. The vessel itself should be adorned with peacock feathers; the peacock was believed to have the ability to swallow all poisons, that is, sins. The Mantric symbol is hrim, as would be expected with the figure of the Amitayus Buddha, who is naturally shown crowned and ornamented, with the body colour of red. The Amitayus Buddha denotes the Dispenser of Long Life.
