[Miodrag Boskovitch, 5 Avenue Louise/13-15 rue Ravenstein, Brussels] Bona Venture Peeters, Antwerp 1614 - Hoboken 1652. The Estuary. Wood, 17½ × 29½ ins., signed and dated 1650. A Master at twenty, this prolific artist was the best Mannerist painter of the Flemish school. In all his interpretations he knew how to convey a real poetical intensity. In this one, a battleship flying the Dutch flag has dropped anchor in front of the bastion defending the access to the harbour. In the foreground, a launch is nearing the shore to load the bales brought by Eastern merchants. To a refined sense of harmony in the colours is added a rigorous technique, perceptible in the precision of the detail.
