[ Bernard Baruch Steinitz, 4 Rue Drouot, Paris ] Detail of a pair of console tables, French Consulate period, of exceptional quality, in chased and gilded bronze. They are extremely rare; no other pieces of this type are known. A central column, in the form of a lictor's fasces flanked by flags and trophies of war, rests on a mahogany base. The pair is believed to have been specially ordered by the Emperor Napoleon I and offered as a wedding present to General Le Marois, who after the Italian campaign had the honour of bringing the captured enemy flags back to Paris.
