[Spink & Son Ltd, King Street, London] John Methuen (1650-1706) was the man responsible for the famous Methuen trade treaty signed between England and Portugal in 1703. Lord Chancellor and Speaker of the Irish House of Lords in 1697, he became Ambassador Extraordinary to Portugal in the year the treaty was signed. This set of eight silver salvers, engraved with his coat of arms, was almost certainly part of John Methuen's ambassadorial service; no comparable set of eight salvers is known. They were made in 1703 by Andrew Moore, the London silversmith who also made the spectacular silver table, hanging mirror and andirons which the City of London presented to William III. They are now at Buckingham Palace. Each salver measures 10⅛ inches (25.7 cms) in diameter, stands 2⅜ inches (6.1 cms) high and the total weight is 249 ounces 10 dwt. Your attention is drawn to the finely engraved coat of arms and the cut-card decoration round the detachable octagonal foot with screw fitting, a very rare feature.

The Cover Shows a Servant Offering tea to a Mandarin Seated upon His Throne. The Front Panel with a Kneeling Servant Working the Bellows on a Fire under a Steaming Tea-Kettle. The Other Panels, Engraved with Colonnading and Trees, Are Decorated with Palm, Pine and Banana Trees and Exotic Birds. By Barnabé Sageret, a Favourite Goldsmith of the King. Paris: 1749 3⅛ × 2¼ in × 1½ in. Sageret (1688-1758) began his career as an orfèvre privilégié, appointed by the King, of the Duc d'Orléans who had in turn been authorized to attach the goldsmith to his household. A gold snuff-box in the Louvre is set with similar panels on mother-of-pearl of the same date, also concerned with the ceremonial preparation and serving of tea. This box however was made much later by Vachette between 1809 and 1819.
